Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Snaps 7-game skid with 83-63 Victory over Champion Christian College

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team wrapped up 2022 play, hosting Champion Christian College for their final non-conference matchup Thursday night inside the Shark Tank. A late second half surge saw HPU take a 83-63 victory over CCC, snapping a 7-game skid.

The Sharks (4-7, 0-3 PacWest) return to conference play to start 2023, while the Tigers (5-3) have one more game in Hawaii.

After Champion Christian hit a free-throw, senior Marquis Moore laid in a ball to get the scoring going for Hawaii Pacific. It was a competitive first half that saw three ties and several lead changes. CCC had a 29-28 lead with less than seven minutes to go, when senior Jalen Chandler hit a layup and a three-pointer to put the Sharks back on top. With a couple of more baskets, Hawaii Pacific held on to a 37-31 lead going into the locker room.

Three made three-pointers for the Tigers saw HPU's lead crumble down to one point in the start of the second half. Then, it was a similar story to the first half, as both teams battled back-and-forth, with Hawaii Pacific keeping the lead for the entirety of it. The final ten minutes of the second frame decided the scoreline, as Hawaii Pacific knocked down their free-throws, and Champion Christian could not find the bottom of the net. The Sharks took home the victory in their 2022 finale, 83-63, over the Tigers.

Moore earned his third double-double of the season with a team leading 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Behind him in both categories was Chandler, who put away 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Sophomore Mason Landdeck had a solid game, scoring ten points and dishing out two assists.

Defensively, along with his 13 points, senior Trey Chapman swatted away two shots.

The Sharks will open up 2023 with a PacWest conference game against the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles. The match is set for Tuesday, January 3, with tip-off around 6:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
