Men's Basketball Falls 76-67 in the Shark Tank

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team looked to open up their 2023 campaign with a victory. They hosted Concordia University Irvine Tuesday afternoon for a PacWest conference matchup inside the Shark Tank. Unfortunately, the second half just did not go the way of HPU, as they fell 76-67 to CUI.

The Sharks (4-8, 0-4 PacWest) play Point Loma in two days, while the Golden Eagles (4-8, 3-4 PacWest) have won back-to-back conference games.

After both teams exchanged free-throws, senior Jalen Chandler laid the ball in for the first field goal of the game. Concordia responded with fire, outscoring Hawaii Pacific 19-8, hitting five long ball shots in the process. Sophomore Mason Landdeck replied with his own trey, before dishing out a pass to senior Trey Chapman, who put away another layup. With a couple of additional free-throws, the Sharks narrowed the margin to 20-18. The teams would then once again exchange mini runs to keep the score close. In the final seconds, the Sharks scored a free-throw to put them up 34-33 heading into the lockers.

It was still a tight match, Landdeck and senior Marquis Moore combined for back-to-back threes to put HPU up 49-46 with 12:50 left in the second half. However, a 20-8 run in favor of the Golden Eagles saw them go up 68-61 with two and a half minutes to go. The Sharks got within five, but could not close the gap, falling 76-67 to Concordia.

Freshman Melo Sanchez led the team in both scoring (16) and rebounds (12), completing his first double-double of the season.

Landdeck trailed behind him with 13 points, knocking down three threes in the game.

Meanwhile, junior Maj Dusanic scored 11 to go with his four rebounds.

The Sharks are back at it in a couple of days as they continue their 6-game homestand by hosting the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions. The game will take place on Thursday, January 5, with tip-off set for around 6:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
