IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University's
Shaline Pipa was honored as the PacWest Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, selected by the conference office for her strong play last week.
Pipa, a freshman from Oldenburg, Germany, is 10-0 this year without having dropped a set in those 10 wins, and she has played at the No. 1 singles position for all but the first of those 10 matches.
Last week, she started with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mariia Borodii from Fresno Pacific. She then beat Sofia Ragona of Academy of Art, 6-4, 6-0. While Ragona is the No. 9 player in NCAA Division II, on Saturday Pipa had to play the No. 9 player in NCAA Division I. USC's No. 1 singles player Salma Ewing became the first player this season to have taken a set off Pipa, winning the first set 6-4. However, Pipa was up a break in the second set when the match was halted, 4-6, 4-2. The following day, Pipa earned her 10th win in a row, beating Washburn's No. 1 singles player, 6-3, 6-0. Pipa played No. 1 doubles alongside
Marleen Tilgner and the pair went 2-1 with one unfinished set.
The No. 7 Sharks (8-4) have a big week on the road in southern California. Today (Monday) the Sharks play at No. 11 Biola, then visit No. 14 Azusa Pacific on Tuesday and square off against No. 4 Indianapolis at Azusa on Wednesday to complete a seven-match trip.
