Women's Soccer Dominates ARTU 5-0 in Conference Opener

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team beat Academy of Art in emphatic fashion with a final of 5-0, Monday afternoon at the Waipio Soccer Complex.

The Sharks (2-3-2) grab their second win in a row in their highest scoring offensive game of the season, while the Urban Nights (0-8, 0-1) continue their search for win number one.

It was all Sharks all game long and it started with junior forward Caylie Uyema getting a pass from sophomore midfielder Marcella Chan that she buried in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Sharks were in the offensive zone for most of the match and junior forward Mehana Ortiz found her opportunity in the 38th minute when she scored the second goal of the match before the half to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

HPU kept their gameplan the same in the second half and remained on the attack. About 11 minutes into the half sophomore defender Nicole Miyazono took a shot from deep beyond the box and sniped the top right corner for her first goal and a 3-0 lead. Junior midfielder Maya Hagiwara wanted to join in on the parade and did so after freshman midfielder Kalea Ajel found her for the the fourth goal. Last, but not least senior defender Hunter Malaki put the final nail in the coffin in the 79th minute with help from graduate midfielder Brittny Ihara downing the Urban Knights five-to-nill.

The Sharks attack and defense kept graduate goalkeeper Sophia Garrido from recording any stats as ARTU did not record a single shot.

The Sharks look to Thursday when they host Dominican, set to kickoff at 4:30 p.m.
