Game Saving Save Equated to a Draw for Women's Soccer

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team tied 1-1 against Dominican Thursday afternoon at Waipio Soccer Complex.

The Sharks (2-3-3) drop into fourth place after the first week of the conference and one spot ahead of the Penguins (2-3-4).

HPU looked to keep their momentum going from Monday's win, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. The Sharks were threatening, and after a couple of touches inside the box, freshman midfielder Kiana Muratsuka connected on a shot that found the back of the net.

Controversy struck later in the first half as the Sharks were on the hunt again. In a 3-on-3 situation inside the box, HPU found the lane and buried another goal, or at least it seemed. In the celebration chaos, the Penguins were taking a freekick back into play. The referee had signaled for a foul that occurred before the goal negating the point.

The Shark's offense held a front until Dominican found a chink in the armor and scored to start the second half. It was a stalemate the rest of the way until the final possession. The Penguins came on the counter and, with seconds left, launched a shot that got knocked away by junior goalkeeper Madi Dephillips saving the match as it ended in a draw.

DePhillips added three more saves to her season, and Muratsuka joined seven other teammates tied for second with one goal on the team.

The Sharks will enjoy some rest time as they await Big Island challenger UH Hilo, who come into town on Sunday, Oct. 9, with kickoff set for 12:30 p.m. HT.
