Dominant Second Half Propels Sharks for First Conference Victory over Penguins, 78-51

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team continued their 6-game homestand by hosting the Dominican University of California for a PacWest conference matchup Wednesday night inside the Shark Tank. A dominating second half secured a 78-51 victory for HPU over DUC.

The Sharks (5-10, 1-6 PacWest) won their first conference game, while the Penguins (8-8, 5-5 PacWest) are on a 2-game skid.

Dominican may have scored the first basket, but it was Hawaii Pacific who came out firing. Senior Marquis Moore and freshman Melo Sanchez combined for ten points in a 15-4 run for the Sharks to start the half. Much like HPU, DUC had a run of their own, closing the gap to a two point deficit, 19-17, with six minutes to go. The Sharks, however, still maintained their lead, and kept it until the first half buzzer sounded, leading 33-27 over the Penguins.

Both teams were trading baskets to start the second half. It was not until eight minutes in when the Sharks stringed together a 14-3 run to open the game up. With a 17 point lead, it was all but inevitable that the men's team would bring home their first conference victory. Capped off by dunks and more three-pointers, Hawaii Pacific took home a 78-51 win over Dominican.

Moore led the team in both points (24) and rebounds (10), for his fourth double-double of the season. Moore shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Mason Landdeck not only dished out a career-high seven assists, but he also scored 11 points.

Senior Jalen Chandler put on a highlight show, putting away two dunks. Chandler also had seven boards, five of which were offensive.

Finally, junior Maj Dusanic had a team leading two steals to cap off the night.

The Sharks now have two games left in the homestand, with their first opponent being the Biola University Eagles. They will battle it out on Saturday, January 14, with tip-off set for around 3:00 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
