Women's Basketball Falls to a Hot Penguins Team, 60-33

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team continued their home stretch by hosting Dominican University of California Wednesday afternoon for a big PacWest conference matchup inside the Shark Tank. Dominican entered today's contest on a 7-game conference win streak. HPU just could not get the ball rolling, as they fell 60-33 to DUC.

The Sharks (7-7, 5-2 PacWest) will face Biola on Saturday, while the Penguins (10-7, 8-2 PacWest) continue to ride a hot wave in PacWest play.

Dominican opened the game on a 5-0 run, scoring on their first two possessions. Senior Avery Cargill got Hawaii Pacific on the board by drilling a deep ball. After a trade of buckets, fellow senior Ella Berge drained a three-pointer to narrow HPU's deficit to one point, 9-8. Unfortunately, finding another basket was hard to come by, as the Penguins closed the quarter out on an 8-0 run.

Trailing 17-8, the Sharks looked to get back into the match. However, it was a quiet second quarter for both teams. DUC started to have some of their shots fall, but HPU still kept themselves in the game, only behind 26-16 going into the lockers.

The second half was all Dominican, as Hawaii Pacific could not get it going the way they normally do. As the final buzzer sounded, the Sharks fell to the Penguins, 60-33.

Despite the loss, graduate Abby Spurgin still completed another double-double, her seventh of the season, with a team leading 11 points and ten rebounds.

Getting some valuable minutes was sophomore Adrienne Harnum, who finished second in scoring with five points.

Meanwhile, junior Haley Masaki stole away two balls, while Berge led the team with two assists.

The Sharks will now prepare to host the Biola University Eagles for a PacWest conference matchup on Saturday, January 14. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
