HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team entered the Shark Tank looking to bounce back after their loss against Dominican, hosting Biola University in a PacWest showdown Saturday afternoon. A huge first half for HPU lifted them over BU, 77-60.
The Sharks (8-7, 6-2 PacWest) bounced back from their tough loss on Wednesday, while the Eagles (7-9, 6-3 PacWest) saw their 5-game win streak come to an end. Â
It was a first quarter that was all Hawaii Pacific. Junior Kaylee Berry knocked in a three-pointer and a layup off of some beautiful passes from senior Avery Cargill to start the quarter. Six players would get on the board for HPU, as they held a 21-5 lead at the end of the first.Â
Biola did not stay quiet for long, hitting back-to-back long balls to start the second. However, the Sharks began hitting more three-pointers and continued to build out their lead. A 7-0 run to close out the quarter saw Hawaii Pacific take a 40-20 lead into halftime.Â
HPU shot 47.2 percent from the field in the first half. They also forced 12 turnovers, resulting in 11 points.Â
The second half told a much different story than the first. Biola was aggressive, which led to a 16-4 run in the middle of the third quarter, narrowing the gap to 14 points, 55-41, by the end of it.Â
Another big run in the fourth quarter chunked Hawaii Pacific's lead to nine points with 3:30 left on the clock. But when it came down to their free-throw shooting ability, HPU went 10-for-11 from the charity stripe in the final minutes. It got close, but the Sharks closed the game out, winning 77-60.Â
Berry took the scoring baton with stride, finishing with a career-high 20 points, hitting three treys in the process, and hauling in five rebounds.Â
Graduate Abby Spurgin followed right behind with 17 points and a team-high three blocks.Â
Meanwhile, Cargill was the rebound leader, finishing with eight boards to go with her 14 points.Â
Finally, junior
Haley Masaki led the Sharks with eight assists, while also putting away nine points.Â
The Sharks have one more home game before they hit the road for a couple of weeks. Up next is the Azusa Pacific University Cougars, a team that has been receiving votes for a top 25 spot in the D2 rankings. This matchup will be on Wednesday, January 18, with tip-off set for 4:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.Â
