Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls to Azusa Pacific, 72-57

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team hosted their final game of their 6-game homestand Wednesday afternoon. A very tough conference opponent, in Azusa Pacific University, entered the Shark Tank with only one conference loss on the season. Strong first and third quarters for APU were too much for HPU, as they fell 72-57.

The Sharks (8-8, 6-3 PacWest) will begin their road trip in six days, while the Cougars (15-3, 10-1 PacWest) are on a 5-game winning streak.

The first quarter was tough for Hawaii Pacific, who did not find their first basket until four minutes in when junior Kalina Obrey laid in the ball. Overall, scoring was hard to come by, with HPU trailing APU 19-6 at the end of the quarter.

It seemed like the second quarter was telling the same story as the first. But with five and a half minutes left, that started to change. After graduate Keona Loftis hit a jumper, the Sharks closed out the half on a 12-4 run, closing their gap to 11 points, 33-22.

Immediately out of the gates in the second half, the Cougars regained the control they had in the first frame. The fourth quarter saw a sprinkle of hope when Loftis hit back-to-back three-pointers, however, the deficit would not dip below double-digits. Hawaii Pacific eventually fell to Azusa Pacific, 72-57.

Loftis led the Sharks with 16 points, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Graduate Abby Spurgin earned her eighth double-double, scoring 11 points and hauling in a team leading 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Jordyn Jensen had a good game off the bench, finishing with 11 points and four rebounds.

Meanwhile, senior Avery Cargill led the team in passing, giving out three assists.

The Sharks have some time off before they travel to California to start their road trip. First, they will travel to Belmont to take on the Academy of Art Knights on Tuesday, January 24. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. PST inside of Walter Gleason Gym.
