Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

A Chaotic Match Goes the way of the Sharks, Winning 69-66 over the Cougars

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team concluded their 6-game homestand Wednesday afternoon. They hosted Azusa Pacific University for a conference matchup inside the Shark Tank. It was chaotic, but HPU came away with the win, 69-66, over APU.

The Sharks (6-11, 2-7 PacWest) enter their road trip with a victory, while the Cougars (12-6, 7-4 PacWest) are on a 3-game skid.

Sophomore Mason Landdeck found senior Trey Chapman for a layup to get the Sharks on the board. It was a back-and-forth game, with Azusa maintaining control for most of the half. However, a late 10-3 run for HPU gave them the lead, 22-20, with three minutes to go. The Cougars knocked down a three to regain the lead, but senior Marquis Moore would hit a last minute layup to put Hawaii Pacific up 24-23 going into the lockers.

The second half was a roller coaster of highs and lows. With 4:18 on the clock, HPU found themselves ahead 50-46. Senior Jalen Chandler then started to make it rain, hitting back-to-back threes to extend the lead to double-digits.

The final three minutes of the game was nothing but chaotic, with crazy shots and technical fouls all over the place. The Cougars brought their deficit down to three points, 61-58, with less than a minute remaining. Senior Elijah Martinez would hit the biggest shot of the game, draining a corner three to give Hawaii Pacific more cushion. Azusa Pacific did give a scare, knocking down the long ball when they needed to. Chandler had to have ice in his veins as he kept putting away his free-throw attempts. A last second tying shot would be attempted, but it would not fall, as HPU took home the big victory, 69-66, over APU.

Chandler led the way in scoring, finishing with 18 points, hitting 80 percent of his shots from the charity stripe.

Moore followed right behind with 14 points, all while completing his fifth double-double with a team leading ten rebounds.

Freshman Melo Sanchez had two crucial steals to go with his 12 points.

Meanwhile, Landdeck continued to dish the ball out, finishing with seven assists and 11 points.

The Sharks will now begin a 5-game road trip, the first being against the Academy of Art Knights on Tuesday, January 24. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. PST inside Walter Gleason Gym.
