Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Landdeck Scores 28, but Men's Basketball falls to Knights 72-62

BELMONT, Calif. – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team began their 5-game road trip Tuesday night. Their first game was against the Academy of Art University inside of Walter Gleason Gym. Sophomore Mason Landdeck's career-high 28 points were not enough, as HPU fell 82-72 to ART U.

The Sharks (6-12, 2-8 PacWest) will play the Hawks in two days, while the Knights (13-7, 8-5 PacWest) bounced back from their close loss to Point Loma.

Senior Jalen Chandler opened the game in style, slamming the ball through for the first bucket of the night. Trailing 10-7, the Sharks were looking for a spark. They found exactly that in a 13-5 run, highlighted by Landdeck converting an and-1 on a four-point play. However, the Academy of Art battled back, eventually taking a 35-34 lead into the lockers.

Although Landdeck hit back-to-back threes to give HPU the lead in the early stages of the second half, the Knights still had a strong hold of the game. Down 14 points with eight minutes to go, Hawaii Pacific was looking for anything. Another Landdeck three lit a fire, as the Sharks chomped the deficit all the way down to five points, 70-65, with two and a half minutes left. Unfortunately for HPU, that would be the closest they would get, falling 82-72 to ART U.

Landdeck finished with a career-high 28 points, hitting five three-pointers in the process. He also tied junior Maj Dusanic for a team leading seven rebounds.

Freshman Melo Sanchez followed right behind with 14 points and five boards.

Meanwhile, Dusanic was a guard at the rim, swatting away three shots.

The Sharks will now head 40 minutes up north to Oakland, California, to take on the Holy Names University Hawks inside of Tobin Gymnasium. The matchup is slated for Thursday, January 26, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. PST.
