Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sharks Take it in Extra Time, Winning 72-65 over Academy of Art

BELMONT, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team took a trip to the mainland for the first time in the season. Up first was Belmont, California, where the Academy of Art University hosted them for a Tuesday afternoon matchup inside of Walter Gleason Gym. It took extra time, but HPU closed out another conference victory, 72-65, over ART U.

The Sharks (9-8, 7-3 PacWest) are now 3-1 in overtime matches, while the Knights (4-14, 4-9 PacWest) will host UH Hilo in five days.

Senior Avery Cargill hit a two-point jumper to begin the scoring for both teams. The two teams battled it out in the first four minutes, with scoring hard to come by, as the Hawks held a 6-4 lead. However, back-to-back three-pointers from Cargill would spark a 16-7 run to close out the quarter. Sophomore Allison Ross contributed a pair of threes as Hawaii Pacific held a 20-13 lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter was very competitive, as neither team allowed the other to score more than three points without responding back themselves. With time winding down, junior Kaylee Berry decided it was time for that to change, hitting two shots in a row to extend HPU's lead to ten, 34-24, going into halftime.

Just like the last time these two teams faced each other, the Knights, trailing, could never be counted out. Before the Sharks knew it, their double-digit lead crumbled to a two-point lead, 43-41 by the end of the third.

Entering the fourth quarter, Hawaii Pacific were looking to close the game in regulation. With 20 seconds left, and leading by two, graduate Abby Spurgin was sent to the line. She knocked down one, but missed the other. Needing a three to tie the game, the Hawks drove the ball down and got a shot off, hitting it. HPU had eight seconds to attempt a game winning shot, but did not have the opportunity to shoot it. The score was 60 all as they made their way to overtime.

It was clear that Hawaii Pacific did not like the fact that they were in extra time, forcing the Hawks to not make a single field goal in the 5-minute period. Meanwhile, Spurgin made four consecutive layups to create a lead, while Cargill made sure to shut the door with her free-throw shooting ability. Although it took a fifth quarter, HPU started their road trip with a victory over ART U, 72-65.

Spurgin's overtime performance helped her to a team leading 23 points, she also hauled in seven rebounds.

Cargill followed right behind with 18 points, shooting 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Cargill also dished out a team-high six assists and stole away three balls.

Berry completed her second double-double of the season, hauling in a team leading 14 rebounds to go with her ten points.

Meanwhile, junior Haley Masaki also had herself a game, scoring ten points and giving out five assists.

Traveling 40 minutes north, the Sharks will now head to Oakland to battle against the Holy Names University Hawks on Thursday, January 24. Their matchup will take place inside of Tobin Gymnasium, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. PST.
