Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

A Career Night for Sanchez as Men's Basketball Routes Holy Names, 95-64

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team continued their 5-game road trip Thursday night, visiting Holy Names University for a PacWest conference matchup inside of Tobin Gymnasium. Freshman Melo Sanchez shot lights out, reaching the 30-point mark for the first time in his collegiate career, as HPU defeated HNU, 95-64.

The Sharks (7-12, 3-8 PacWest) are now 3-2 in their last five games, while the Hawks (5-15, 2-10 PacWest) will look to redeem themselves against Point Loma on Monday.

Senior Jalen Chandler hit a jump shot to get Hawaii Pacific on the board, answering the made basket by Holy Names just before. It was a battle between the two teams in the first eight minutes, not allowing the other to get ahead by much. However, after leading 20-18, the Sharks opened up a shooting clinic, specifically Sanchez, who hit four three-pointers on four consecutive possessions for HPU. To top it all off, he added a fifth three a couple minutes later. Off the back of ten made long balls as a team, Hawaii Pacific entered the locker room leading 55-30.

It was some lights out shooting from HPU in the first half, as they shot 57.6 percent from the field, while knocking down 50 percent of their three-pointers.

The Sharks started the second half on a 6-0 run, and never looked back, maintaining a lead of at least 22 points throughout the rest of the game. Sanchez scored six more points to obtain his first 30-point game of his college career, while Hawaii Pacific closed out the game, winning 95-64 over Holy Names.

Sanchez shot 11-for-14 en route to a 30-point game. He also led the team in rebounds, bringing in eight.

Chandler and sophomore Mason Landdeck followed behind with 12 points a piece. Landdeck also dished out a team-high six assists.

Finally, junior Maj Dusanic and senior Trey Chapman scored 11 and nine points respectively, while bringing in six rebounds each.

The Sharks will once again head north, this time to San Rafael, California, to take on the Dominican University of California Penguins inside of the Conlan Center. The matchup is slated for Sunday, January 29, with tip-off set for 3:30 p.m. PST.
