Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spurgin Drops 31, Sharks Soar over Hawks, 88-66.

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team continued their California road trip by heading to Oakland to take on Holy Names University Thursday afternoon inside of Tobin Gymnasium. HPU were in control from quarter two and beyond, winning 88-66 over HNU.

The Sharks (10-8, 8-3 PacWest) will head to Dominican in three days with a mini 2-game win streak, while the Hawks (1-19, 0-12 PacWest) will look for their first conference win against Point Loma in four days.

After surrendering the first basket of the game, graduate Abby Spurgin laid the ball in to get Hawaii Pacific on the board. It was a quiet start to the quarter for HPU, only scoring four points through the first seven and a half minutes. However, after graduate Ashley Nunez knocked down a three-pointer, the Sharks were able to tie the game up at 13 all by the end of the first.

Both teams decided to turn on the burners in the second quarter, but it was Hawaii Pacific who would burst out into the lead. The score was 17-15 in favor of the Hawks in the first minute, which would be the last time they saw the lead. Five different players for the Sharks combined for a 28-14 run to close out the quarter. Sophomore Allison Ross hit a pair of threes, while Spurgin scored the final ten points to give HPU a 43-31 lead heading into halftime.

The Sharks entered the second half with the lead, and never saw it dip under 14 points. Spurgin added 11 more points in the third quarter to help eclipse the 30-point mark for the fourth time this season. Meanwhile, HPU closed the game out with a dominant victory over the Hawks, 88-66.

Spurgin dropped her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 31 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Ross, who hit three three-pointers on the night, followed behind with 15 points. She also gave out six assists.

Sophomore Jordyn Jensen scored 10, while senior Avery Cargill and Nunez ended with eight points each. Nunez hauled in six rebounds, while Cargill dished out a team leading seven assists.

Continuing northbound, Hawaii Pacific will now travel to San Rafael, California, where the Dominican University of California Penguins will host the Sharks for another conference matchup. The game is set for Sunday, January 29, with tip-off around 1:00 p.m. PST inside of the Conlan Center.
