Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spurgin Sets Another School Record With Seven Blocks, Sharks Best Penguins 71-64

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team headed over to the Conlan Center Sunday afternoon to take on the Dominican University of California. Spurgin continued her dominant season by breaking another HPU record, recording seven blocks, as HPU outlasted DOM for another conference victory, 71-64.

The Sharks (11-8, 9-3 PacWest) are 3-0 so far on their road trip, while the Penguins (13-9, 11-4 PacWest) head off for their own 4-game road trip.

Senior Avery Cargill would get Hawaii Pacific on the board with a layup two minutes into the game. In a first quarter that saw four ties, HPU would break loose near the end of it. Graduate Abby Spurgin connected on three straight jumpers before sophomore Allison Ross knocked in a three-pointer to cap off a 9-0 run. That run gave the Sharks a 21-14 lead at the end of the first.

Dominican came knocking to start the second quarter, chipping Hawaii Pacific's lead all the way down to three points with five minutes to go. However, HPU responded, breaking out on a 8-3 run off the backs of Spurgin and Ross. Unfortunately, the tide would once again shift, with the Penguins finishing the first half on a 7-0 run to make the scoreline 34-33 in favor of the Sharks.

With the score almost even, the third quarter was set to be a battle. Seven lead changes would occur in the quarter, but sophomore Jordyn Jensen would lay in the final basket to give Hawaii Pacific a 49-48 lead entering the final quarter of regulation.

The Sharks found themselves trailing 53-52 with 7:39 left on the clock to start the fourth. Another layup by Jensen would spark a 12-2 run, with Jensen capping it off with a three-pointer. Penguins player Brittney Cedeno did provide a heroic attempt, bridging the gap back down to three points, but another Ross long ball would all but seal another victory for Hawaii Pacific on this road trip. Cargill went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds, as HPU outlasted DOM 71-64.

Spurgin broke another HPU school record this season with seven blocks on the day, a record she had previously tied earlier in the month. She also led the Sharks in both scoring (18) and rebounds (12), completing her 10th double-double of the season.

Ross followed right behind her with 15 points, shooting 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Ross also led the team in passing by dishing out four assists.

Finally, Cargill's 5-for-5 from the free throw line helped her to finish the game out with 13 points.

Up next for Hawaii Pacific is a stop in Fresno, where the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds will host the Sharks for a PacWest conference matchup inside of the Special Events Center. Their game is set for Tuesday, January 31, with tip-off around 5:00 p.m. PST.
