Women's Basketball Unable to Extinguish the Hot Shooting Sunbirds, Falling 79-51

FRESNO, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team wrapped up their first road trip to California by visiting Fresno Pacific University Tuesday afternoon inside the Special Events Center. FPU's hot shooting night was too much for HPU, as they fell 79-51.

The Sharks (11-9, 9-4 PacWest) have one final match in their 5-game road trip against Chaminade next Wednesday, while the Subirds (8-12, 3-10 PacWest) are 2-0 against Hawaii based teams.

It was a tough start for Hawaii Pacific, only finding their first basket, a jumpshot by graduate Abby Spurgin, three minutes into the quarter. On the other hand, it was a dominant start for Fresno Pacific, going ahead 11-2. HPU would close the gap slightly, finishing the first quarter trailing 15-7.

The second quarter saw a couple of runs by the Sharks, but it was strongly matched by the Sunbirds, who entered halftime leading 30-17.

The second half told the same story as the first half, strong shooting from Fresno Pacific, while Hawaii Pacific just could not get it to fall. The closest HPU got was 13 points, as they eventually fell to FPU, 79-51.

Spurgin did have a nice night overall, completing her 11th double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds, all while adding five blocks to her season total.

Senior Avery Cargill, like a thief in the night, came away with three steals. Graduate Keona Loftis followed right behind her with two of her own.

Meanwhile, junior Haley Masaki led the team with three assists to go with her five points.

The Sharks will finally head back to the islands for a road game against the Chaminade University Silverswords. Their matchup is set for Wednesday, February 8, with tip-off around 5:30 p.m. HT inside McCabe Gymnasium.
