Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sharks fall to No. 21 Point Loma, 90-59

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team continued their homestand by hosting Point Loma Nazarene University Thursday night inside the Shark Tank. PLNU entered tonight's contest as the No. 21 team in the D2SIDA men's basketball media poll. PLNU's three-point shooting was too much, as HPU fell 90-59.

The Sharks (4-9, 0-5 PacWest) will look for their first conference win against Academy of Art University on Sunday, while the Sealions (13-3, 8-0 PacWest) stay undefeated in conference play.

Point Loma scored a free-throw to start the game, but senior Jalen Chandler would dunk the ball for the first bucket of the match. However, if there was something PLNU was confident in, it would be their ability to hit the deep ball, knocking down nine threes in the first half. The Sharks did shoot over 50 percent in the half, but the defense of the Sealions forced several turnovers, which was used to score 15 points. When the buzzer sounded, HPU found themselves trailing 52-35.

Although freshman Melo Sanchez conducted a small 5-0 run, the closest HPU got in the game was 15 points. The gap built by Point Loma was too wide for Hawaii Pacific to close, as they fell 90-59.

Sanchez led the Sharks in scoring with 14 points, senior Trey Chapman followed behind with ten points and a block.

Senior Marquis Moore and Chandler led  the rebound game with eight and seven a piece. Moore also dished out a team leading three assists.

The Sharks have a few days off before hosting the Academy of Art University Knights on Sunday, January 8. Tip-off is set for around 3:00 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
