Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

The Sharks Fall in Overtime Thriller to Golden Eagles, 92-90.

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team resumed PacWest conference play Tuesday afternoon. They hosted Concordia University Irvine for the first matchup of 2023 inside the Shark Tank. In a game that saw 23 lead changes, HPU fell just short in overtime, losing 92-90 to CUI.

The Sharks (5-6, 3-1 PacWest) suffered their first conference loss, while the Golden Eagles
(9-4, 6-1 PacWest) are on a 4-game win streak.

After winning the tip, graduate Abby Spurgin laid in the ball for the first basket of the game. It was a feisty first half, accumulating 28 total fouls, resulting in 32 free-throw attempts. The biggest factors in the half were Point Loma's ability to hit the three ball, knocking down five, while Hawaii Pacific kept grabbing offensive boards, leading to 12 second chance points. The buzzer sounded with HPU trailing CUI by a single point, 43-42, heading into halftime.

Spurgin was on fire with 13 points in the first quarter, before adding five more in the second. Junior Haley Masaki and senior Ella Berge also contributed with seven points each.

The second half saw the fouls die down a bit, but the game still keep its competitive nature, as there was never a lead of more than seven points. With 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Spurgin scored another layup to put the Sharks up by one, 78-77. Concordia then drove the ball and converted an and-1 opportunity. Fortunately, due to a technical foul, HPU was awarded two free-throws, which they sank to tie the game up at 80 all. Both teams got last second chances to close the game out, but neither side was able to do so. They would have to play overtime to decide the winner.

Immediately from the tip, the two teams continued to exchange baskets. However, after a couple of Hawaii Pacific misses, the Golden Eagles built a lead of four points with a minute to go. The Sharks responded with two consecutive layups to tie up the game once again. CUI player Katie Timmerman then took the ball down, and sank her fifth three of the night. With time running out, the Sharks were able to hit a two-point jumper to get within one, but would not receive another chance to win. After a thrilling overtime, Hawaii Pacific fell just short to Concordia-Irvine, 92-90.

Spurgin led the Sharks in scoring with 31 points. She was also a monster on defense, swatting away four shots.

Masaki had a career-high 23 points, while also dishing out a team-high four assists.

Graduate Keona Loftis was strong on the boards, hauling in a team-high 13 rebounds.

Finally, Berge completed her first double-double of the season, with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

This was just the first of six straight home games for the Sharks. Up next will be the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions on Thursday,  January 5, with tip-off set for 4:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
