HPU on Fire From Deep in Dominant 70-41 Victory over Point Loma

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team hosted a PacWest conference matchup against Point Loma Nazarene University Thursday afternoon in the Shark Tank. A hot three-point shooting performance for HPU saw them take home a 70-41 victory over PLNU.

The Sharks (6-6, 4-1 PacWest) bounced back from Tuesday's loss, while the Sealions (7-9, 5-3 PacWest) suffered their first conference blemish in four games.

It took a minute and a half, but Hawaii Pacific found the first points of the game thanks to senior Ella Berge converting on an and-1 opportunity. Then, the scoreline snowballed in favor of HPU, who dominated the quarter on both sides of the ball. They shot 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, all while holding the Sealions to a nine percent shooting accuracy. The Sharks found themselves leading 24-3 by the end of the first.

The second quarter saw a more organized Point Loma, as they started to hit their shots. However, this did not deter Hawaii Pacific, who continued to make it rain from downtown. As the first half came to a close, senior Avery Cargill knocked down her fourth three of the half to give HPU a 44-16 lead heading into the lockers.

It was a much closer second half overall, as the Sharks only outscored the Sealions 26-25, but the damage was already done. Hawaii Pacific finished the game on a 7-2 run, winning the game 70-41 over Point Loma.

Leading the way in point and rebounds, with her fifth double-double of the season, was graduate Abby Spurgin, who scored 19 while bringing in 13 boards. Spurgin also swatted away three shots.

Cargill's five three-pointer performance saw her finish right behind with 18.

Berge and sophomore Jordyn Jensen also helped in the points department, putting away seven each.

Meanwhile, junior Haley Masaki dished out four assists to go with her four points.

The Sharks will have three days off before their next conference matchup, this time against the Academy of Art University Knights. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. HT on Sunday, January 8, inside the Shark Tank.
