Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sharks Shoot 47 Percent From the Field, but Fall 88-82 to Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif. – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team visited Fresno Pacific University Tuesday night for a conference matchup inside the Special Events Center. HPU battled back from being down 18 points , but came up just short, falling 88-82 to FPU.

The Sharks (7-14, 3-10 PacWest) will look to bounce back against Chaminade in a week, while the Sunbirds (6-14, 3-10 PacWest) end their 6-game PacWest skid.

After Fresno Pacific scored the first basket, Freshman Melo Sanchez followed it up with a couple of shots of his own. The first half saw the Sunbirds jump to double-digit leads, but the Sharks responded to close each gap. Sophomore Mason Landdeck put the team on his back, scoring 17 straight points, including five three-pointers, to keep HPU in the game. However, a 6-0 run by Fresno Pacific to end the half saw Hawaii Pacific trailing 48-36 going into the lockers.

The second half was a battle, with both teams going on scoring runs to shift the momentum of the game. The Sharks eventually found themselves trailing by 18 points with ten minutes to go. Fortunately for HPU, FPU got themselves into heavy foul trouble, allowing Hawaii Pacific to obtain many opportunities from the free throw line.

Eight consecutive made shots from the charity stripe clawed the Sharks back to within six points. A couple of baskets and free throws later saw Hawaii Pacific tie the game up at 76-76 with three minutes to go. Unfortunately for HPU, a few possessions were turned over, as they fell to FPU 88-82.

Landdeck made six three-pointers for a team-high 26 points, while Sanchez followed right behind with 23 points.

Senior Marquis Moore also had a high scoring game, finishing with 18 points to go with three steals.

Finally, junior Maj Dusanic led the team in rebounds (8) and blocks (2).

The Sharks will now travel back to homeland to take on the Chaminade University Silverswords inside of McCabe Gymnasium. Their matchup is set for Wednesday, February 8, with tip-off around 7:30 p.m. HT.
