Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

A Late Surge Aids Men's Basketball in Trilling 100-98 Victory over the Silverswords

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team visited Chaminade University for a road matchup inside McCabe Gymnasium Wednesday night. The two teams battled, but a late surge by HPU found them victorious, 100-98, over CUH.

The Sharks (8-14, 4-10 PacWest) end their 2-game skid, while the Silverswords (12-14, 7-11 PacWest) suffer their first loss in three games.

After a Chaminade bucket, senior Trey Chapman got Hawaii Pacific on the board to even the scoreline. The Silverswords held a 14-11 lead, before the Sharks went on a 13-0 run, highlighted by sophomore Mason Landdeck hitting three three-pointers. HPU had control for most of the half, until a 23-8 run in favor of CUH saw the momentum shift. The first half buzzer sounded with Hawaii Pacific trailing Chaminade 57-53.

The second half continued the first half battle, both teams fighting back-and-forth. With less than three minutes to go, the Sharks found themselves trailing 98-93. However, they would not allow the Silverswords to score another point. Meanwhile, Chapman hit a layup to put Hawaii Pacific up by one point 99-98, with 40 seconds to go. A final free throw by freshman Melo Sanchez made the game out of reach, as HPU stole the victory, 100-98, over CUH.

Senior Marquis Moore led the team in points (25) and rebounds (9).

Landdeck knocked down five threes en route to a 21 point game. He also dished out a team leading five assists.

Finally, Chapman, Sanchez, and junior Maj Dusanic followed behind with 19, 15, and ten points respectively.

The Sharks will now get to head back to the Shark Tank for two final home games. The Holy Names University Hawks are first up, on Friday, February 10, with tip-off set for around 6:30 p.m. HT.
