Women's Basketball Dominates in 81-47 Victory over Chaminade

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team returned to the islands for their final away match of their 5-game road trip. They visited Chaminade University Wednesday afternoon for a conference matchup inside the McCabe Gymnasium. It was a dominant night for HPU, beating CUH 81-44.

This win marked 40 straight wins for the women's basketball team over Chaminade.

The Sharks (12-9, 10-4 PacWest) bounced back from their loss to Fresno Pacific last week, while the Silverswords (1-23, 1-17 PacWest) have two more games in the regular season.

Senior Avery Cargill started the scoring off, hitting a layup to get Hawaii Pacific on the board. Junior Kalina Obrey then took it upon herself to score the next nine points, capping it off with a long ball. A string of free throws to end the quarter found the Sharks leading 23-12 over the Silverswords.

The second quarter was competitive at the beginning, but an 11-0 run in the middle of it helped extend HPU's lead to 40-18. Cargill and sophomore Allison Ross connected on back-to-back threes during the run. As the clock winded down, HawaiI Pacific held a 42-23 lead going into halftime.

The second half told the same story as the first, dominance from the side of HPU. A big focus for HPU was their defense, forcing CUH to commit 28 turnovers. The Sharks closed the game out, winning 81-44 over the Silverswords.

Obrey kept on scoring, all the way to a team leading 23 points. Cargill followed in suit with nine points and dished out a team leading three assists.

Ross and senior Ella Berge scored seven apiece. Meanwhile, graduate Keona Loftis stole away a team-high three balls.

The Sharks will now head back to the Shark Tank for two final home games. Up first is the Holy Names University Hawks on Friday, February 10, with tip-off set for 4:30 p.m. HT.
