Spurgin Ties HPU Single-Game Record, Sharks Win 62-52 over Knights

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team looked to follow up Thursday's dominant performance with another victory. They hosted Academy of Art University Sunday afternoon for a PacWest conference matchup in the Shark Tank. A hot third quarter lifted HPU over ART U 62-52.

The Sharks (7-6, 5-1 PacWest) have won consecutive games, while the Knights (3-10, 3-5 PacWest) suffer their first loss in three games.

The Academy of Art knocked down the administrative technical free-throw to start the game. Graduate Keona Loftis responded on Hawaii Pacific's first possession by hitting a three-pointer. Senior Avery Cargill followed up with her own a couple minutes later. The Knights were leading 9-8 with 2:21 left, but the Sharks closed out the first quarter with a 7-2 run to take a 15-11 lead.

The second quarter started off well for HPU, holding a lead of at least four points throughout the first five minutes. However, two ART U players combined for a 10-0 run to rocket the Knights ahead, 30-26, with three minutes to go. After a Hawaii Pacific timeout, sophomore Jordyn Jensen swished back-to-back threes in the next two possessions. The Academy of Art responded with their own long distance ball, before Loftis sank two free-throws to give the Sharks a 34-33 lead going into halftime.

A rejuvenated HPU came out in the second half, exploding for a 17-5 run, hitting three three-pointers in the process, two of which came off the back of Cargill.

Entering the fourth quarter, Hawaii Pacific led 51-42 . Not down and out yet, the Knights opened the final frame with a 8-2 run to cut their deficit down to three points. Fortunately for the Sharks, they had a lot of depth on their side, which was used to perfection. Sophomore Allison Ross, who came off the bench, capped off a 9-0 HPU run by hitting a three-pointer and a layup to put the Sharks back up front. With time expiring, Hawaii Pacific took another PacWest conference victory, 62-52, over the Knights.

Leading the way in point and rebounds, for her sixth double-double of the season, was graduate Abby Spurgin, who scored 16 while bringing in 13 boards. Spurgin also had an astonishing six blocks, which ties a school record that was last achieved by Gabriella Fotu in 2017.

Cargill hit three long distance shots for a total of 11 points, she also had five assists. Ross followed just behind her with ten points.

Jensen was a monster on the board, hauling in 11 rebounds to go with her eight points.

Meanwhile, junior Haley Masaki dished out a team leading six assists to go with her three steals.

The Sharks are halfway through their 6-game homestand. Up next is the Dominican University of California Penguins who will visit Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday, January 11. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
