Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Another Close Battle Slips Away From HPU, 74-67, in Favor of ART U

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team hosted the Academy of Art University Sunday afternoon for a PacWest conference matchup in the Shark Tank. It was tight, but HPU could not close the game as they fell 74-67 to ART U.

The Sharks (4-10, 0-6 PacWest) have some time to regroup for Wednesday, while the Knights (10-5, 5-3 PacWest) have won four straight conference games.

After trading scoring blows, senior Marquis Moore swished a three pointer. Sophomore Mason Landdeck followed him up by knocking in back-to-back long distance shots. But, a 12-0 run stifled Hawaii Pacific's momentum, giving the Knights a 16-11 lead with ten minutes to go. A sequence that resulted in five free-throws for HPU helped them to get back into the game. Then, freshman Melo Sanchez took over, scoring 11 straight points, hitting three three-pointers in the process. However, the Academy of Art kept bouncing back, all the way to a 31-30 scoreline in favor of the Sharks heading into halftime.

ART U came out swinging to start the second half, as HPU trailed 38-33 in the first three minutes. But over the next five minutes, Hawaii Pacific would flip the scoreline over into their favor, going on a 14-2 run. The Sharks were still leading 65-61 with less than five minutes to go, but a crushing 11-0 run for the Academy of Art would shut out all hope for HPU, as they fell 74-67 to ART U.

Sanchez led the Sharks in scoring with 18 points, knocking down three three-pointers.

Landdeck followed behind him with 12 points, as well as three long balls.

Finally, junior Maj Dusanic dished out some passes, finishing with a team leading four assists.

The Sharks, now halfway through their 6-game homestand, will prepare to host the Dominican University of California Penguins on Wednesday, January 11. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
