Sharks Sweep Hilo

Weingartner scores his fifth goal of the season

HILO, Hawai'i. - On Saturday morning, the HPU men's soccer team faced off against the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans in a PacWest matchup with the goal of repeating what happened in their earlier matchup this past Wednesday.

In the first half, the Sharks set the tone with Leandro Weingartner drawing a penalty and burying the ensuing kick to put HPU up 1-0 early in the game. Hawai'i Pacific themadded some insurance to their lead with Weingartner finding Jonathan Sorto to double the lead in the 21st minute. Dennis Dyner, Connor Prenovost, and Yuma Yamamoto played suffocating defense as the Vulcans were unable to find an equalizer before halftime.

In the second half, Hawai'i Hilo attempted to mount a comeback as they were able to cut the deficit in half in the opening minutes of action. The Vulcans looked poised to find the tying goal late in the game but Connor Margo was able to deny the attack as the Sharks swam away with the victory.

The game ended in a huge win for the Sharks as they picked their first win in conference play.

HPU will look to turn these back-to-back win into a streak on Thursday, Oct. 12th, as they face off against Chaminde in the Honolulu Derby.
