Sharks win PacWest opener 57-32 over Westmont

HONOLULU, Hawai'i. - On Saturday afternoon the Hawai'i Pacific University women's basketball team played their PacWest Conference opener against NCAA-newcomer, Westmont College. HPU arrived back to The Shark Tank looking to bounce back after a tough week in Bellingham while the Warriors looked to move to 2-0 in conference play after a win against Chaminade

In the first quarter, HPU would set the tone with a 16-point run after going down 0-4 in the opening minutes. True freshman Leslie Mojica would wreck havoc on the squad from Santa Barbara as she would find Erika Glenn multiple times for quick buckets in transition while picking up points of her own. Meanwhile Kaylee Berry would enter the contest off the bench and proved to be a spark plug for the Blue and White. The junior from California immediately picked up six points while collecting a pair of blocks with reigning PacWest Player of the Week Megan Jones

The second quarter was all HPU as the Sharks would outscore Westmont 20-10. Haley Masaki and Mojica would facilitate the shooting clinic that Glenn and Berry would put on as the duo finished the half with each double-digit points.

As the buzzer sounded for the second half, the Sharks would quickly snuff out any chance of a comeback as they held Westmont to ten and five points across the last two quarters as Berry's eight second half points secured the 57-32 victory.

After struggling from the field last week the Sharks quickly got back on track as they converted on 49% of their baskets while holding Westmont to 16.9%.

Glenn continues to emerge as a standout for the Sharks as her 11 points marks the fourth time in six games that she has reached double digits while also leading the squad with eight boards. Also in first career start Mojica would make the most of her opportunity leading the team in assists and steals to go along with seven points and rebounds.

HPU will look to move to 2-0 in the PacWest as they continue their homestand against Fresno Pacific on Monday afternoon.
