HONOLULU, Hawai'i - On Monday afternoon the HPU women's basketball team looked to keep their winning ways going after routing PacWest newcomer, Westmont College.The Sharks who earlier that morning, received Player of the Week (
Kaylee Berry) and Team of the Week honors would be matched up against Fresno Pacific who got off to a great 5-2 start for the young 2023/24 campaign.
In the first quarter the Sharks were able to establish a early double digit lead thanks to a couple of threes from guards
Erika Glenn and
Leslie Mojica. The visiting Sunbirds like the Warriors were held to single digits in the opening ten minutes falling behind 17-7 after
Jordyn Jensen was able to get to the line and convert on both attempts.
The next quarter saw both teams unable to get their offenses going as both squads would combine for 18 points. Late in the period,
Keona Loftis and Mojica would give sink a pair of threes to extend the lead to a game-high 16 points. However, the Sunbirds would hit a pair of shots inside the key to bring the deficit down to 12 heading into the break.
In the ensuing action, the Sharks were unable to put Fresno Pacific away for good The visiting PacWest foe was able to outscore the Sharks 20-9 cutting HPU's lead to a single point heading into the fourth quarter.
Kamehameha alums
Kalina Obrey and
Haley Masaki, would give valiant efforts to salvage a gritty win but the Sunbirds were able to go on a 7-0 run to close out the game and secure the 57-47 victory.
Although a tough loss for Hawai'i Pacific, Head Coach
Ray Alvarado's squad is building an identity of being one of hardest teams to score on in the conference as PacWest opponents are scoring 33% less than there average points per game.
Also after seeing her four-game streak of having at least four blocks end this past Saturday,
Megan Jones continues to prove why she is a PacWest Defender of the Year frontrunner as she ended the night with five blocks.

HPU will take a two week break and then will be back at the Shark Tank on December 19th to take on Carroll College in their last non-conference matchup of the season.
