Landdeck Hits Buzzer Beater to Send Game to Extras, Sanchez Shoots Lights Out in Overtime for 92-84 Victory

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team returned home for their final homestand of the season, hosting the visiting Holy Names University Friday night inside the Shark Tank. A buzzer beater in regulation caused the Shark Tank to erupt. A dominant overtime saw HPU take a 92-84 victory over HNU.

The Sharks (9-14, 5-10 PacWest) are on a 2-game winning streak, while the Hawks (5-18, 2-13 PacWest) are on a 5-game skid.

Senior Marquis Moore got the scoring going with a mid-range jumper. Hawaii Pacific would start the game up on a 11-5 run. Every time HPU created a lead, HNU always found a way to bring it back. Time was winding down with the Sharks in possession. Sophomore Mason Landdeck created space, before eventually finding senior Jalen Chandler in the corner, who swished the ball as the buzzer sounded. HPU entered the locker room leading 49-40 over HNU.

The Hawks were scrappy all throughout the second half, fighting to minimize their deficit. All of the sudden, the Sharks were the ones who found themselves trailing 82-78 with just over a minute to go. Down two possessions, Landdeck quickly drove down the lane for a layup to narrow their gap to two points.

Still, Hawaii Pacific needed to find an opportunity. A great defensive stand by HPU gave them that chance, but the clock was running. Freshman Melo Sanchez took a three-pointer, looking to win the game, but it rimmed out. Like a bolt of lighting, Landdeck ran to find the rebound and pushed the ball towards the net with the buzzer sounding. The Shark Tank erupted as the ball fell through the net to tie the game up at 82-82.

With momentum on their side, the Sharks never looked back in overtime. Sanchez stepped up to the plate, hitting back-to-back threes to take this game to the promised land. A dominant fifth quarter saw Hawaii Pacific win 92-84 over Holy Names.

Moore was lights out from the field, hitting 80 percent of his threes for a team leading 21 points.

Landdeck, the regulation hero, followed right behind him with 20 points. To top it all off, he dished out eight assists.

Meanwhile the overtime hero, Sanchez, knocked down five long balls for a total of 19 points.

Finally, senior Trey Chapman led the Sharks with eight rebounds, while junior Maj Dusanic brought in seven.

The Sharks will host their final home game of the season against Fresno Pacific University on Monday, February 13 for senior night. Tip-off is set for around 6:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.

Senior night festivities will take place in between the two games on Monday night.
