Men's Basketball Falls in the Final Minute to Fresno Pacific 64-62 on Senior Night

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team competed in their final home game of the season against Fresno Pacific University Monday night inside the Shark Tank. It came down to the wire, as HPU barely fell 64-62 to FPU.

The Sharks (9-15, 5-11 PacWest) will finish the regular season on the road, while the Sunbirds (8-16, 5-12 PacWest) play Chaminade in a couple of days.

It took a couple of minutes, but senior Marquis Moore got the party rolling with a corner three. Freshman Melo Sanchez followed him up, hitting a mid-range jumper before knocking down his own long ball to put HPU up 8-0. Fresno Pacific brought it back and the two teams would tie each other up four times. The Sunbirds then had a 9-2 run late in the half, giving them their first lead of the game. They stayed ahead for the rest of the half, taking a 32-26 lead into halftime.

The Sharks were trailing 55-42 with 8:26 left in the game. An explosive 11-0 run, capped off by senior Elijah Martinez draining a long ball, brought the deficit down to two points. From there on out, Fresno Pacific stayed in the lead, but the pressure was still there from Hawaii Pacific. As time was dwindling, it came down to the final five seconds of the game, with HPU trailing. The chance was there for the Sharks, but they could not get the shot off, falling 64-62 to Fresno Pacific.

Sophomore Mason Landdeck led the way for the Sharks, making three long balls en route to 16 points.

Moore followed right behind with 14 points and hauled in a team leading eight rebounds.

Meanwhile, senior Trey Chapman scored 13 points to go with six rebounds, while Sanchez finished with ten points and a team leading four assists.

Hawaii Pacific celebrated seniors Eli Russo, Marquis Moore, Trey Miller, Elijah Martinez, and Jalen Chandler for senior night. Their impact on the program will be remembered forever.

The Sharks will now travel to California to conclude their regular season. Up first is San Diego, where they will take on the Point Loma Sea Lions on Saturday, February 18. Tip-off is set for around 8:00 p.m. PST inside the Golden Gymnasium.
