Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spurgin Scores 32, Dominant Second Half Propels Women's Basketball to 76-52 Win over Holy Names

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team returned home for the first time in three weeks Friday night, hosting Holy Names University inside the Shark Tank. Second half dominance propelled HPU over HNU 76-52.

The Sharks (13-9, 11-4 PacWest) have one final home game on Monday, while the Hawks (1-21, 0-15 PacWest) have one more matchup in Hawaii against Chaminade.

Holy Names jumped to an early 5-0 lead before graduate Abby Spurgin got Hawaii Pacific on the board with a layup. Still, it was a rough going for the Sharks, who were trailing 8-3 with six and half minutes to go. However, three Shark players combined for a 9-2 run to give HPU their first lead of the game. From there on out, the two teams battled to an 18-18 tie going into the second quarter.

Quarter number two saw the Sharks run ahead with a 10-0 run. Senior Avery Cargill became a chef for the first half, dishing out eight assists, five which went to Spurgin. Hawaii Pacific scored a layup with 3:03 left on the clock to put them up 33-27. After that, the game became a stalemate, with neither team finding another scoring opportunity.

The depth on the side of Hawaii Pacific really benefited them as they were able to keep fresh players in at all times. With that, HPU slowly built up a large margin and never looked back, taking the victory on homecoming night 76-52 over Holy Names.

Spurgin completed her fifth 30+ point game, scoring 32 to go with her seven rebounds.

Junior Kalina Obrey hauled in a team-high nine rebounds, she also scored 14 points. Senior Ella Berge followed behind in both categories, with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Cargill finished the game with a career-high nine assists. Meanwhile, sophomore Allison Ross was a menace on defense, finishing with three steals and one block.

The Sharks will have one final home game as they host the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds for senior night on Monday, February 13. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.

Senior night festivities will take place in between the two games on Monday night.
