Women's Basketball Battles, but Eventually Falls 72-64 to the Sunbirds on Senior Night

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team competed in their final regular season home game Monday afternoon inside the Shark Tank. FPU's free throw shooting was too much for HPU, who fell 72-64.

The Sharks (13-10, 11-5 PacWest) have finished things up at home and will travel to California, while the Sunbirds (11-13, 6-11 PacWest) bounced back from their tough loss against UH Hilo.

Junior Kalina Obrey got Hawaii Pacific on the board with an and-1 conversion. Senior Avery Cargill then traded a Fresno Pacific three with one of her own. It was the Sunbirds who maintained control most of the quarter, building a 19-12 lead with two minutes to go. However, three straight scoring possessions for the Sharks saw them tie the game up at 19 all. As the first quarter came to an end, FPU hit a buzzer beating two-pointer to take a 21-19 lead over HPU.

Much like the previous quarter, the second quarter saw the Sunbirds take the lead. Another seven point deficit had to be dealt with in the final two minutes. Hawaii Pacific, with five free throws, narrowed the gap to two points, 33-31, going into the locker room.

Graduate Abby Spurgin scored 11 points in the third quarter to keep HPU in the game, but they still found themselves trailing 49-45 going into quarter four. An 8-0 run in favor of the Sunbirds expanded their lead to 12 points, 66-54, with four minutes to go in the fourth quarter. A couple of solid possessions got the Sharks back within six, but the free throw shooting ability of Fresno Pacific was good enough to keep them out of range. HPU eventually fell to the hands of FPU 72-64.

Spurgin led the way for the Sharks, scoring 21 points and hitting all seven of her free throws. Spurgin also swatted away a team-high three shots.

Sophomore Allison Ross and Cargill followed behind with 15 and 14 points respectively. Ross also stole away a team-high three balls.

Finally, Obrey hauled in a team leading eight rebounds, while junior Haley Masaki dished out a team-high three assists.

Hawaii Pacific celebrated seniors Maleah Turner, Avery Cargill, and Abby Spurgin for senior night. Their impact on the program will be remembered forever.

The Sharks have wrapped up all home games for the season. Up next, a 4-game road trip in California to conclude the regular season. Their first matchup is in San Diego against the Point Loma Sea Lions on Saturday, February 18. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. PST inside the Golden Gymnasium.
