Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls to No. 8 Point Loma

SAN DIEGO – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team began their 4-game road trip in California by taking on Point Loma Nazarene University Saturday night inside the Golden Gymnasium.

Point Loma entered tonight's contest as the No. 8 team in the D2SIDA men's basketball media poll.

The Sharks (9-16, 5-12 PacWest) will look to bounce back against the Cougars on Monday, while the Sea Lions (24-3, 19-0 PacWest) continue their undefeated run through the PacWest.

Point Loma quickly jumped ahead with a three-pointer off of the tip-off. However, this did not phase Hawaii Pacific, as freshman Melo Sanchez and senior Jalen Chandler connected on back-to-back threes in response. In fact, HPU held an 11-8 lead three and a half minutes into the game. Yet, PLNU proved why they are considered a top team, going on a 24-2 run in a span of five minutes, including a span where they hit five threes in five consecutive possessions. The Sharks continuously chipped at the deficit, entering the lockers trailing 58-34.

Point Loma ran away with the second half, as Hawaii Pacific fell 120-74.

Sanchez had a fiery night, hitting six threes en route to a team leading 24 point night.

Senior Marquis Moore followed right behind with 15 points, all while hauling a team-high nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, sophomore Mason Landdeck and senior Trey Chapman finished with 11 and ten points respectively.

The Sharks will now travel to Azusa to face off against Azusa Pacific University on Monday, February 20. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PST inside the Felix Event Center
