Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Explosive Third Quarter Helps Women's Basketball Take a 67-59 Win over Point Loma

SAN DIEGO - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball traveled to California to start their final road trip of the regular season. They visited Point Loma Nazarene University Saturday afternoon for a PacWest conference matchup inside the Golden Gymnasium. An explosive third quarter helped HPU earn a 67-59 over PLNU.

The Sharks (14-10, 12-5 PacWest) have won three out of their last four, while the Sea Lions (14-13, 12-7 PacWest) lost their 6-game win streak.

Point Loma got themselves on the board with a layup, but senior Avery Cargill responded with authority, knocking down the long ball. It was a blow for blow first quarter, as neither team let the other score more than four points in a row.

The second quarter kept that same play. With three minutes to go in the half, graduate Ashley Nunez sank a three-pointer, sparking a 6-0 run to give HPU a two point lead. However, a 5-0 run capped off by a last second three was the main difference maker, as PLNU took a 27-24 lead into halftime.

The Sharks exploded in the third quarter, going on a 13-0 run, highlighted by Cargill and graduate Abby Spurgin scoring 11 of the points. Back-to-back threes from Point Loma would halt the run, but Hawaii Pacific held on to a 41-36 advantage heading into the fourth.

Although PLNU got within three points, Nunez and Cargill each hit a three to keep the lead in the hands of HPU. As time winded down and fouls started to be drawn, the Sharks hit their free throws to take away any chance of the Sea Lions making a comeback. Hawaii Pacific earned a 67-59 victory over Point Loma.

Spurgin led the team with 22 points and 11 rebounds, collecting her 12th double-double of the season.

Cargill knocked down three three-pointers and seven free throws en route to a 20 point game, all while dishing out a team-high four assists.
Finally, senior Ella Berge finished with ten points and eight rebounds, while Nunez had nine points and two assists.

The Sharks will now head to Azusa to take on the Azusa Pacific University Cougars on Monday, February 20. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m. PST inside of the Felix Event Center
