Women's Basketball Fights Hard with Azusa Pacific but Drops Matchup 73-63

AZUSA, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball traveled to the Felix Event Center to take on Azusa Pacific University Monday afternoon. HPU fought hard, but ended up falling to APU 73-63.

The Sharks (14-11, 12-6 PacWest) will play Concordia Irvine in three days, while the Cougars (22-4, 17-2 PacWest) will play their final game of the regular season in five days.

Graduate Abby Spurgin scored three baskets to respond to Azusa Pacific's three made shots to start the game. Both teams then exchanged small runs with each other, before the Cougars made a free throw to go up 17-16 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter made the biggest difference, as APU used back-to-back three-pointers to build up a lead. HPU closed the gap to two points, but a 7-0 run to end the first half saw Azusa Pacific take a 36-27 lead into halftime.

Knowing they needed to get off on the right foot to begin the second half, the Sharks turned to sophomore Allison Ross, who knocked down the long ball. Hawaii Pacific narrowed their deficit to two points, but a collapse in the middle of the quarter gave the Cougars their biggest lead of the night yet at 12 points. However, Hawaii Pacific recovered nicely, finishing the third quarter on an 8-2 run.

The Sharks battled in the fourth, keeping their gap at six points multiple times. Unfortunately, every time they scored, it seemed that Azusa Pacific had an answer for them. With time winding down, APU hit their free throws to take the 73-63 victory.

Spurgin led the way in the scoring category, finishing with 17 points. Sophomore Jordyn Jensen followed just behind with 13.

Senior Ella Berge was a monster on the boards, hauling in a team-high 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, senior Avery Cargill dished out a team leading five assists.

The Sharks will now head to Irvine, California to take on the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles on Thursday, February 23. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. PST inside the CU Arena.
