Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Heavily Test Cougars, Falling 78-73.

AZUSA, Calif. – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team traveled to Azusa to take on Azusa Pacific University for a PacWest conference matchup Monday night inside the Felix Event Center. HPU made APU work for the win, falling short 78-73.

The Sharks (9-17, 5-13 PacWest) are on a 3-game skid, while the Cougars (20-6, 15-4 PacWest) have now won eight games in a row.

After stealing the ball, senior Jalen Chandler hit a three-pointer to get Hawaii Pacific on the board. The Sharks found themselves leading 28-26 with 5:30 left on the clock. HPU then closed the half on a 12-7 run to take a 40-33 lead into halftime.

The Cougars immediately opened up the second half with a gigantic run. 51-46. In the first five minutes, Azusa Pacific outscored Hawaii Pacific 18-6. However, the Sharks continued to battle, tying the game up at 61-61, thanks to freshman Melo Sanchez knocking down a long ball. Both teams continued to trade, all the way to a 73-73 scoreline with less than a minute to go. Unfortunately, a three-pointer and a defensive steal sealed the fate for HPU, falling 78-73 to APU.

Senior Marquis Moore led the way, scoring 24 points, while Sanchez was right behind with 20 of his own.

Sophomore Mason Landdeck was eyeing up a triple-double, finishing with ten points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Meanwhile, junior Maj Dusanic hauled in a team leading eight rebounds and swatted away two shots.

The Sharks will now travel to Irvine, California to face off against Concordia University Irvine on Thursday, February 23. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PST inside the CU Arena.
