Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cargill Scores 22, Women's Basketball Falls 78-60 in Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball traveled to Irvine to take on Concordia Irvine University Thursday afternoon inside the CU Arena. A solid second quarter for CUI was too much for HPU as they fell 78-60.

The Sharks (14-12, 12-7 PacWest) will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, while the Golden Eagles (17-8, 14-5 PacWest) end their 4-game skid.

Concordia Irvine started the scoring, before senior Avery Cargill sank a three pointer to get Hawaii Pacific on the board. The two teams then tied three times to a 10-10 scoreline with six minutes to go. The scoring subsided, however, HPU ended the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 18-12 lead.

The Sharks were leading 24-16 two and a half minutes into the second quarter. The Golden Eagles then erupted for a 15-0 run to establish a 31-24 lead. The Sharks tried to chomp into the lead, but found themselves trailing 41-31 at halftime.

Hawaii Pacific continued to push back at Concordia Irvine, narrowing their deficit to eight points multiple times. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles never broke, eventually reestablishing a double digit lead with three minutes to go in the fourth quarter. HPU ended up falling to CUI 78-60.

Cargill led the way in scoring, finishing with 22 points, hitting three three-pointers.

Graduate Abby Spurgin and sophomore Jordyn Jensen followed right behind her with 12 and 11 points respectively. Spurgin hauled in a team leading six rebounds while Jensen brought in four.

Finally, sophomore Allison Ross finished the game with seven points, four rebounds, and three assists.

The Sharks now have one final game of the regular season. They will head to La Mirada, California to take on Biola University on Saturday, February 25. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. PST inside Chase Gymnasium.
