Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ross Ties School Record as Women's Basketball Drop Regular Season Finale to Biola 80-76

LA MIRADA, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball traveled to Chase Gymnasium to wrap up their regular season against Biola University Saturday afternoon. The two teams battled to overtime, where BU outlasted HPU 80-76.

Despite the loss, sophomore Allison Ross tied a single-game school record with eight made three-pointers. She became the third player to hit such a mark, the other two being Alysha Marcucci (at Holy Names - 01/26/19) and Starr Rivera (at Point Loma - 02/17/20).

The Sharks (14-13, 12-7 PacWest) will enter PacWest postseason play as the #6 seed while the Eagles (14-13, 12-7 PacWest) will enter PacWest postseason play as the #4 seed.

Senior Avery Cargill started the scoring off with a bang, knocking down a long ball. There would be seven lead changes as Hawaii Pacific hit three three-pointers, but found themselves trailing 15-13 at the end of the first.

The second quarter is when the Eagles made a push, outscoring the Sharks 14-3 over a four minute period to earn a 33-22 lead. HPU tried to battle back, however, they entered the lockers with a 37-29 deficit.

In the third quarter, sophomore Allison Ross and the Sharks rallied all the way back to a 49-49 scoreline. Unfortunately, Biola were still able to keep them at arm's length heading into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles wanted to end the game, but the Sharks would not let them. If there was anything HPU was really relying on, it was the three-pointer. Cargill hit a game-tying long ball with 1:39 on the clock. Both teams then had chances, but neither could convert on a game-winning basket.

Like the rest of the match, overtime was competitive, Graduate Abby Spurgin hit a tying layup with a minute left in the game. Biola immediately responded with a basket of their own. A defensive stand by the Eagles forced the Sharks to foul. With time running out, BU hit their free throws to take the game 80-76.

The Sharks hit 16 threes in the contest, which is third best in program history.

Ross made an immaculate eight three-pointers in the game en route to a career-high 26 points.

Spurgin followed behind with 14 points and a team leading two blocks, while sophomore Jordyn Jensen had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Finally, Cargill dished out a team leading seven assists, while senior Ella Berge hauled in a team-high ten rebounds.

The Sharks will now prep for the postseason, entering the playoffs as the #6 seed in the PacWest. They will face off against Concordia University Irvine on Thursday, March 2. Tip-off time is set for 12:30 p.m. HT inside McCabe Gymnasium
