2024 Softball Season Preview

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - As anticipation rises for the upcoming season of the Hawaii Pacific University Softball team, let's dive into the storylines that will define their 2024 campaign. The Sharks, led by the experienced Head Coach Jarnett Lono, are gearing up for a thrilling ride through a challenging 48-game schedule that promises high-stakes competition, international flair, and redemption. 

Alumni Game at Howard A. Okita Field: A Tradition Continues

The Alumni Game has become a cherished tradition for the Hawaii Pacific softball program, providing a platform for former players to reconnect with teammates, coaches, and the vibrant softball community that calls the Blue and White home. This year's edition promises to be a special occasion, as the past and present converge for an afternoon of memories, camaraderie, and the shared love of the game.

The diamond will be graced by familiar faces and unforgettable names from the program's storied history. Alumni who once donned the HPU's jerseys will step back onto the field, bringing with them a wealth of experience, skills, and the pride of having contributed to the legacy of Hawai'i Pacific softball. Expect to see former standouts showcasing their enduring passion for the sport and their alma mater.

Beyond the excitement of the game itself, it is an opportunity to honor the contributions of those who laid the foundation for the program. Leading the Charge into 2024

Jarnett Lono's roots in the Hawaii Pacific softball program run deep, dating back to her enrollment at HPU in 1995. A standout athlete in her own right, she earned Third-Team NFCA All-American honors at second base in her senior in HPU's and help lead the Sea Warriors to their first PacWest Conference Championship. Since joining the HPU softball coaching staff in 1999, Lono has become synonymous with excellence, dedication, and a commitment to fostering a winning culture.As Head Coach Jarnett Lono enters her seventh season, she carries with her the experience of triumphs and challenges, the wisdom of a seasoned mentor, and a burning passion for the game. Her leadership style, marked by a blend of discipline, inspiration, and strategic acumen, has become the driving force behind the Sharks' pursuit of greatness.

Tiari Hernandez: A Force at First Base

Junior infielder Tiari Hernandez, a hometown hero from Waipahu, returns to the diamond after a stellar 2023 outing. Hernandez not only led the Sharks but set a standard of excellence, topping the charts in total bases, runs scored, walks, doubles, and home runs. Her dynamic contributions didn't go unnoticed, as she earned a well-deserved spot on the All-PacWest Second Team at first base. Hernandez's ability to deliver in clutch moments, combined with her defensive prowess, makes her a cornerstone in the Sharks' quest for glory.

Taylor Thompson: The Ace Returns to the Circle

In the pitching circle, junior Taylor Thompson returns after an impressive sophomore campaign. Thompson led the Sharks in ERA, strikeouts, and games started, showcasing a level of composure and skill beyond her years. Her dominant presence on the mound not only stifles opposing offenses but serves as a rallying point for the entire team. As Thompson takes the circle, expectations soar, and HPU will look to her for leadership and control in high-stakes situations.


A 48-Game Quest: Concordia Kickoff Classic and Beyond
The Sharks kick off their season with a stop at the prestigious Concordia Kickoff Classic, where they'll face off against some of the nation's top softball programs. This early-season challenge will serve as a litmus test for Hawaii Pacific, providing an opportunity to gauge their strengths, refine strategies, and set the tone for the demanding season ahead.

Adding an exciting international twist to their schedule, the Sharks are set to take on Japan's Josai University in a 9-inning exhibition game. This cross-cultural clash promises to be a unique experience for both teams, showcasing the universal language of softball and fostering goodwill through the love of the game. The clash of styles and skills is sure to create unforgettable moments on the diamond.

The heartbeat of the season lies in the numerous PacWest matchups that await the Sharks. The fierce rivalries within the conference will provide the ultimate tests, as HPU seeks to assert its dominance and make a statement in the conference. The squad will be fueled by the memories of their 2023 triumphs, clinching a tournament berth with a crucial sweep over Chaminade in the last week of the regular season.
