11/22/2024 8:18:00 AM

The Hawai'i Pacific University men's basketball team recently wrapped up a competitive three-game road trip through California, facing Sonoma State, Stanislaus State, and Chico State. While the Sharks came up just short in all three contests, they showcased resilience, growth, and the potential for an exciting season under the guidance of head coach Jesse Nakanishi.

Game-by-Game Recap

November 15, 2024: Sonoma State 74, HPU 70
The Sharks opened their road trip with a close battle against Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, CA. Graduate forward Jonas Visser led the charge with 22 points on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting performance, adding five rebounds. Sophomore guard Joshua West contributed 14 points and six boards, while Sherman Brashear provided a spark off the bench with nine points, including two clutch three-pointers.

HPU controlled the paint, scoring an impressive 50 points inside, and kept pace with Sonoma State through 11 ties and eight lead changes. However, struggles at the free-throw line (56%) made the difference in a game that could have gone either way.

November 16, 2024: Stanislaus State 75, HPU 67
In their second matchup, the Sharks faced a tough Stanislaus State team in Turlock, CA. Sherman Brashear emerged as the team's top scorer, dropping 20 points while shooting 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Charlie Weber added 15 points, showcasing his shooting ability with three triples, and Jonas Visser continued his consistent play, chipping in 12 points and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.

The Sharks made nine three-pointers and shot 33% from deep, but Stanislaus capitalized on key second-chance opportunities and fast-break points to pull away in the second half. Despite the loss, HPU demonstrated improved ball movement and offensive execution.

November 18, 2024: Chico State 85, HPU 83
The road trip concluded with a thriller against Chico State in Chico, CA. Graduate student Sherman Brashear delivered another standout performance, leading the Sharks with 23 points, eight rebounds, and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line. Charlie Weber had one of his best games of the trip, scoring 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including four three-pointers. Joshua West rounded out the scoring leaders with 14 points and six rebounds.

The Sharks came out strong in the first half, putting up 49 points on 61.5% shooting, including 8-of-13 from beyond the arc. However, a late surge by Chico State, in a game that featured 12 lead changes and seven ties, narrowly edged out HPU in the final minutes.

What's Next for the Sharks?

Although the results weren't in their favor, the road trip provided valuable experience and key takeaways for the Sharks. Under head coach Jesse Nakanishi, who is known for his player development and strategic leadership, the team is poised to build on these performances as they prepare for PacWest play.
