Box Score (MANOA, HI) - In a rollercoaster of a season, HPU baseball wrapped up the regular games with a bang, setting their sights high as they head into the playoffs. The first match was a perfect snapshot of their season – they started strong, hit a bump, but rallied back with determination. Noah Hata, fondly known as NuNu, continued to sizzle at bat, launching a ground rule double that brought in two crucial runs. Among those crossing home plate was Kota Suzuki, hailed as HPU's Male Athlete of the Year, marking his 72nd hit, a new team record. Though a momentary setback stung when Chase Taylor's impressive sprint was called back, the team shook it off, led by pitcher Shea Blanchard's steady performance.
As the game progressed to a 5-1 lead for the Sharks, their aggressive base running and smart plays kept Chaminade on their toes. Yet, a hiccup reminiscent of mid-season struggles threatened their lead, with pitching control wavering, relief efforts stumbling, and batters missing opportunities. But just as they've done before, the Sharks roared back in the seventh inning, spurred by Chase's hustle and NuNu's bat, snatching victory from the jaws of uncertainty. With closer Ryan Inouye clinching the win with his record-breaking 13th regular-season save, the Sharks ended the first game on a triumphant note.
The anticipation was palpable as the second game approached, with the team eyeing a milestone 30-win season for the first time since 2016. Despite an early setback, there was no panic as they regrouped, led by starting pitcher Shea Lake's calm demeanor. A decisive five-run surge in the third inning secured their path to victory, with Shea's solid pitching and the team's tight defense showcasing their unity and resolve. Contributions came from all corners, with standout performances from players like Skyler Agnew, Ian Wolski, and Caleb McMillikan, underscoring the depth and adaptability nurtured by Coach Dane Fujinaka throughout the season.
With a gritty 30-win season behind them, defined by teamwork, depth, and unwavering spirit, the Sharks are poised for success in the upcoming PacWest tournament, ready to build on their achievements starting May 8th in Azusa, California. Here's wishing the Sharks the best of luck as they continue their journey!
