WAIPI'O, Hawai'i -
Ocean Bustamante struck late in the 87th minute to lift Hawaii Pacific University (2-2-4, 1-1-2 PacWest) to a 1-0 victory over Vanguard (3-4-1, 1-1-0) on Thursday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
Sophomore forward
Ocean Bustamante secured the put-back on a deflected shot by senior forward
Saraya Burghardt, earning a lead late after the Sharks withstood heavy pressure from the Lions.
Freshman goalkeeper
Skylar Jacobsen turned in a stellar performance, recording 11 saves to earn the shutout as Hawaii Pacific weathered a 19-shot barrage from the Lions.
Despite Vanguard's attacking pressure, the Sharks' defense held firm throughout the day, and Bustamante's late finish rewarded their resilience.
Hawaii Pacific received three yellow cards on the day. The first came from
Lisette Almanza in the 67th minute, the second went to
Sara Redfield in the 84th minute, and the final card went to
Justice Valdez in the 90th minute. They were all the first cards of the season for these players.
The Sharks will return to the pitch this Saturday, Oct. 11th at 4:30 p.m. as they take on the Cougars of Azusa Pacific University at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
