ROCKLIN, Calif. - Â Hawai'i Pacific University (4-0-2, 1-0-0) annihilated Jessup University (1-3-2, 0-1-0) Â in a devastating 4-0 shutout at Warrior Field Thursday afternoon.Â
The Sharks were led offensively by local freshman
Alex Arguijo of Peral City, who struck twice in the first half. The first came in the 25th minute as freshman
Paul Norberg perfectly placed a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into a swarm of Sharks, where Arguijo was waiting to cleanly head the ball into the net. Just moments later, in the 27th minute, the pair would connect again on an incredibly similar play coming off a throw-in.
Junior
Kelly Takara would be the next Shark to beat the Warriors' senior goalkeeper Alonso Ruiz. In the 49th minute, a free ball from a Jessup attack was expertly passed across the field by junior wingback
Felix Leins to Takara for a hard shot from just outside the 18-yard box to the right side high corner.
However, it was junior midfielder
Samuel Gantner who put the final nail in the coffin for the Warriors. Gantner was dished the easy put-in to the lower left corner on the backside of a free kick along the backline just outside the 18-yard box from Leins.
While this was an incredible performance by the Sharks, the victory was marred by several penalties throughout the game. The Sharks were issued two yellows. The first was to junior
Pedro Ashley, his first yellow of the season, in the 19th minute. The second went to junior
Yony Avelar, his 2nd of the season, in the 36th minute. However, the worst came in the 67th minute when Arguijo picked up the Sharks' first red card of the season. This came after Jessup's junior forward Gavin Shin targeted the defenseless Sharks' freshman goalkeeper
Oliver Holt with a full sprint lunge as he tried to jump and recover a dead ball, resulting in an on-field brawl. Shin, who had also received a yellow mere moments earlier for targeting sophomore defender
Tyson Norr while mid-air, was also issued a red card, Jessup's first of the season. Both Shin and Arguijo will face a minimum one-game suspension for being issued a red card.Â
The Sharks will continue their road stretch at Fresno Pacific this Saturday at 5 p.m. HT. As with all conference matches, the game can be watched on the PacWest Network.Â
