HONOLULU - Hawai'i Pacific University (10-4, 6-3 PacWest) secured the sweep of Menlo College (3-14, 3-8 PacWest) this year in a thrilling spectacle, carving up the Oaks 82-69.
The Sharks' performance was led, not just in points, but in style, by
Casey Steadmon, who racked up 20 points by shooting a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc and landing jaw-dropping no-look reverse layups. Steadmon also contributed three steals and six rebounds to the team's efforts. He was closely followed by
Joshua West, who landed 5-11 threes and a couple of field goals for 19 points, with an assist, a steal, and a block.
Quinton McCullough provided muscle in the paint, pulling down six rebounds, with two steals, and two blocks.
While Menlo drew first blood, the Sharks struck fast with an eight-point run to start the half and secure a lead. Each team traded blows, but by the end of the half, the lead had only changed three times, and was tied 39-39. Statistically, the teams were evenly matched. The Oaks even had a slightly higher field goal percentage at 47.1% compared to the Sharks' 44.1%; however, the Sharks' ability to out-rebound the Oaks offset this difference. In the second half, the Sharks were relentless, sinking two threes and a dunk before the first media timeout of the half. The Sharks were the first to lead in the half and held that position for the remainder of the game, ballooning their lead to as much as 20 points at 2:35 left in the game. This allowed Head Coach Jessie Nakanishi to display the full depth of his bench, sending in players such as
Kemp Van Es,
Kahiau Bruhn, and
J Marxen, who got an assist and a rebound.Â
The Sharks will see action again this Tuesday versus Biola at 6:30 p.m. HST. That game will be available on the PacWest Network.
