SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific showed early pop and continued to compete throughout Friday's doubleheader at Point Loma, but the Sea Lions capitalized on key innings to secure 12-2 and 6-0 victories at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Game One: Wirthgen, Murakoshi Provide the Spark
The Sharks (2-4) wasted no time getting on the board in the opener. Brock Wirthgen launched a solo home run to right field in the first inning, giving HPU an early 1-0 lead.
After Point Loma answered in the second, Hawai'i Pacific continued to apply pressure at the plate. Ethan Murakoshi delivered a strong performance, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the fifth inning to pull the Sharks within three at 5-2. Murakoshi accounted for half of HPU's six hits in the contest.
HPU turned three double plays defensively and continued to compete through all seven innings despite a six-run sixth by the Sea Lions that widened the margin.
Game Two: Pitching Staff Regroups
In the second game of the day, Point Loma pushed across six runs in the opening frame. From there, the Sharks' pitching staff settled in and kept the Sea Lions off the board for the remainder of the game.
Jayden Gabrillo and Eli Lipinski combined to hold Point Loma to just two hits across six innings, with Lipinski tossing two scoreless frames in relief. The Sharks continued to compete defensively and worked through competitive at-bats despite being limited offensively.
Across the doubleheader, HPU displayed resilience and flashes of power as the Sharks continue their road swing and look to build momentum moving forward.
