SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific delivered one of its biggest wins of the season Thursday night, knocking off No. 17-ranked Point Loma, 91-84, inside Golden Gym. The Sea Lions entered the contest 22-5 overall and sitting first in the PacWest standings, but the Sharks closed with a dominant second half to secure the statement victory — and Head Coach Jesse Nakanishi captured his 50th career win in the process.
HPU (17-9, 13-8 PacWest) shot an outstanding 66 percent from the field, including a blistering 76.9 percent in the second half, turning a seven-point halftime deficit into a road win against the conference leader.
Joshua West was sensational, pouring in 31 points on 11-of-13 shooting while knocking down all three of his attempts from beyond the arc. He added six rebounds and three assists in an efficient all-around performance.
Josh Niusulu added 19 points, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line, while Quentin Meza contributed 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Quinton McCullough added 10 points and five rebounds, and Maj Dusanic chipped in eight points and five boards as the Sharks controlled the interior with 52 points in the paint.
After trailing 42-35 at halftime, HPU erupted for 56 second-half points, shooting nearly 77 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes. The Sharks capitalized in transition, scoring 13 fast-break points, and held strong defensively down the stretch in a game that featured seven ties and five lead changes.
Point Loma finished with 84 points behind strong individual efforts, but the Sharks' efficiency and composure in key moments proved decisive.
The victory not only stands as one of the Sharks' biggest wins of the season, defeating a nationally ranked opponent on its home floor, but also marks a milestone moment for Nakanishi as he reaches 50 career wins at the helm of the program.
