HPU Baseball Wins Series at Biola, Arnold records 24th career home run

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific won three of four games against Biola over the weekend, bouncing back from a one-run loss in the opener to take the final three games of the series. In the process, Tyler Arnold added another milestone to his standout career, recording his 24th career home run to set HPU's all-time program record.

The series opened Friday with a tight 8-7 loss. The Sharks built a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning on RBI hits from Noah Hata and Brock Wirthgen, then answered again in the seventh with three runs to reclaim the lead. Hata finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Blake Helsper added three hits. Biola, however, got a walk-off home run in the ninth to take the opener.

HPU responded Saturday with an 11-2 win in game two. After holding a 2-0 lead through the early innings, the Sharks broke the game open with a nine-run seventh. Hata drove in a run, Jayden Gabrillo added a two-run single, Andrew Nykoluk followed with a two-run hit, and Arnold capped the inning with a four-run home run. Cristian Garcia earned the win in relief as the Sharks evened the series.

The Sharks followed with another close win in game three, defeating Biola 3-2. HPU tied the game in the sixth on Brock Wirthgen's sacrifice fly, then pushed across two runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Arnold and an RBI single by Gabrillo. Andrew Nykoluk earned the win in relief, and Noah Rhea collected the save.

HPU closed the series Monday with a 10-7 victory. The Sharks scored in six different innings and totaled 15 hits in the finale. Kan Taguchi had three hits and two RBIs, Ziah Chang drove in three runs, Brock Wirthgen added two RBIs, and Arnold finished with an RBI double. Rhea earned the win in relief, and Nykoluk picked up the save.

With the series win, Hawai'i Pacific improved to 20-16 overall and continued its strong stretch in conference play. Arnold's record-setting home run also added another chapter to a weekend that saw the Sharks leave La Mirada with three important wins.
