TURLOCK, California – Hawai'i Pacific rallied from a two-goal deficit and scored a stoppage-time equalizer to draw with Stanislaus State, 3-3, Thursday night at Warrior Stadium. The result moves Hawai'i Pacific to 1-2-1 on the season.
Stanislaus State controlled the opening half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on a goal from Alexis Cervantes, assisted by Jose Ponce and Gerardo Flores. The Warriors doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Colin Davis scored off an assist from Ponce, sending Stanislaus State into the break up 2-0.
Hawai'i Pacific cut the deficit in half in the 59th minute, as
Kelly Takara scored off an assist from
Tyson Norr to make it 2-1. Stanislaus State answered in the 67th minute, when Cervantes scored his second goal of the match off an assist from Jose Tizoc, pushing the lead back to 3-1.
The Sharks continued to push, and Takara struck again in the 76th minute, converting a penalty kick to make it 3-2. Hawai'i Pacific completed the comeback in the 90th minute, when
Alex Arguijo scored off an assist from
Pedro Ashley to level the match at 3-3, the final score.
Hawai'i Pacific finished with 12 shots, including five on goal, while Stanislaus State totaled 18 shots with eight on goal. Sharks goalkeeper
Eduardo Marin made five saves across the full 90 minutes.
Hawai'i Pacific was whistled for 17 fouls to Stanislaus State's 19 in a physical, card-filled match.
Konrad Mueller and
Olle Ridelius were each issued yellow cards for HPU, while Stanislaus State picked up five yellow cards of its own, including one on the team bench.
Hawai'i Pacific continues its season on the road against Chico State on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7:00 p.m. in Chico, California.
