ATHERTON, California – Hawai'i Pacific traveled to Wunderlich Field on Friday afternoon, where the Oaks topped the Sharks, 3-0, in a non-conference match up.
Menlo broke through in the 13th minute when Leilani Phillips scored, unassisted, to make it 1-0. The Sharks had chances of their own in the opening half, with
Lisette Almanza testing Oaks goalkeeper Caroline Cordes twice, in the 22nd and then in the 25th minutes, while
Lauren Longworth also had an early look in the first minute. HPU goalkeeper
Natalie Navarro made a save in the first half before giving way to
Azjah Tocher to start the second.
Menlo doubled its lead in the 48th minute on a goal from Avery Grieve, and Phillips added her second of the match in the 54th minute, assisted by Jacky Vasquez Lopez, to make it 3-0. Tocher made five saves in the second half to keep the score where it stood.
Longworth led the Sharks with seven shots on the afternoon, three of which were on goal, while
Cadence Mason and
Jadyn Miller each had shots saved by the Oaks' goalkeepers. Hawai'i Pacific finished with 12 shots overall, including six on goal, while Menlo out-shot the Sharks 19-12.
Hawai'i Pacific was whistled for seven fouls to Menlo's 13, while the Oaks held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. Menlo's Ella Liebhardt picked up a yellow card in the second half.
Hawai'i Pacific continues its road trip in California, facing Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 11:00 a.m. in Monterey.
