SEASIDE, California – Hawai'i Pacific and Cal State Monterey Bay played to a scoreless first half Sunday morning at Cardinale Stadium before the Otters pulled away for a 5-1 win over the Sharks. The loss drops Hawai'i Pacific to 0-5-0 on the season.
The Sharks broke the deadlock first, as
Lauren Longworth scored in the 49th minute off an assist from
Kaitlyn Anderson to give HPU a 1-0 lead. Cal State Monterey Bay answered quickly, tying the match in the 54th minute on a goal from Gianna Foss, assisted by Chloe Van Winkle.
The Otters took the lead for good in the 68th minute when Miye Kodama scored off an assist from Foss, making it 2-1. Naomi Tobias extended the lead to 3-1 in the 74th minute, assisted by Juliana Dow. Hawai'i Pacific had a chance to answer in the 79th minute, but a penalty kick attempt from
Ocean Bustamante was unsuccessful. Cal State Monterey Bay added two more goals late, as Ella Schug scored unassisted in the 83rd minute and Nika Louchard closed the scoring in the 89th minute, assisted by Dow, to make the final 5-1.
The Otters out-shot the Sharks 20-5 on the afternoon, with an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. Sharks goalkeeper
Natalie Navarro made two saves across the full 90 minutes.
Hawai'i Pacific was whistled for three fouls to Cal State Monterey Bay's six, while the Otters held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Cal State Monterey Bay was issued a team yellow card in the 61st minute.
Hawai'i Pacific continues their season with a match against UH Hilo on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 12:30 p.m. on the Big Island.
