Baseball Drops Game One, Takes Game Two 17-7

St. George, UT (March 13, 2011) – Pitching was at a premium at Bruce Hurst Field as Hawai'i Pacific and Dixie State combined for 40 runs in the doubleheader. The Red Storm took with opener 10-6, but the Sea Warriors won the nightcap in convincing fashion, 17-7.  

HPU led early in game one, after scoring five runs in the second inning. Kale Sumner and Les Akeo each had two RBI hits; while Jordan Inamasu singled home HPU's first run. Dixie State's bats took over in the middle innings, tallying eight total runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. HPU loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs, but was only able to score one run.

Akeo, Troy Ajer, and Wade Tamaru each had two hits for HPU. Starter Michael Greene was tagged with eight runs in five innings to get the loss. Peter Ibanez was solid in relief, surrendering one earned run in three innings.

After two scoreless innings in game two, HPU broke the game open with seven runs in the third inning. Dixie State gift wrapped the inning by committing an error and walking seven Sea Warriors, four of whom scored. The big hit was a two RBI double down the left field line by Kale Sumner. HPU was not done there, scoring ten more runs over the next three innings.  

Toby Inouye got the win for HPU, moving his record to 4-0 on the season. Sumner had a career day going 4-4 with three runs scored and five RBI. Ajer continued his strong play of late with three hits and four runs scored. Keanu Kapana, Tamaru, Rylan Morihara, and Lanan Rice-Kashima each had two hits in the win. Kapana and Morihara also each had three runs driven in.

HPU is now 6-10 overall and 4-2 in the PacWest. Dixie State moves to 10-7, 7-3.

Both teams will play another doubleheader on Monday, starting at 3:00 PM.
